How to Transfer Aircraft Title in Minnesota
Minnesota has one of the strongest general aviation cultures in the country. From the Twin Cities' busy metro airports to the Boundary Waters seaplane country in the north, aircraft are a way of life here. Cirrus Aircraft — headquartered in Duluth — has made Minnesota a global name in aviation manufacturing. This guide covers everything you need to know about transferring aircraft title in Minnesota.
FAA Governs All Transfers
Minnesota has no state aircraft title process separate from the FAA. All transfers go through the FAA Civil Aviation Registry in Oklahoma City.
What You'll Need
- FAA Form 8050-2 (Bill of Sale)
- FAA Form 8050-1 (Aircraft Registration Application)
- $5 FAA registration fee
- Lien release if applicable
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Search the FAA registry at registry.faa.gov to confirm clear title and no liens.
Step 2: Pre-purchase inspection. Minnesota winters are hard on aircraft — pay particular attention to corrosion, heated hangar history, and engine condition.
Step 3: Seller completes FAA Form 8050-2 with aircraft details and buyer's legal name.
Step 4: Buyer completes Form 8050-1 and mails with Bill of Sale and $5 to the FAA Registry.
Step 5: Carry the pink copy in the aircraft until the permanent certificate arrives.
