FAA Governs All Transfers

Colorado has no separate state aircraft registration. All transfers go through the FAA Civil Aviation Registry.

What You'll Need

• FAA Form 8050-2 (Bill of Sale)
• FAA Form 8050-1 (Aircraft Registration Application)
• $5 FAA registration fee
• Lien release if applicable

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Title search at registry.faa.gov.

Step 2: Pre-purchase inspection with altitude in mind. Colorado's high-density altitude airports (Leadville is the highest in the US at 9,927 ft MSL) demand aircraft in top mechanical condition. Verify engine compression, turbocharger condition, and oxygen system if equipped.

Step 3: Complete the Bill of Sale. Seller completes FAA Form 8050-2.

Step 4: Submit registration. Buyer mails Form 8050-1, Bill of Sale, and $5 to the FAA Registry.

Step 5: Carry the pink copy until your certificate arrives.
